Bismarck: ND Senate looking at SPED funding; districts see "double-digit increases"

Mar 15, 2025, KFYR, Bismarck, ND: Senate passes bill looking into special education funding

A House bill is heading to Governor Armstrong’s desk looking at how to best manage special education funding.

The bill creates an interim committee to study the funding formula and provide results ahead of the 2027 legislative session.

Representative David Richter, R-Williston, says they need to make sure districts are making the most of their dollars.

“Whether you’re a special ed student, an EL student, or a CTE student, it doesn’t make any difference. How do we provide the best education and the proper resources for the school districts to provide that best education?” asked Richter.

Richter says some districts have seen double-digit increases in special education students over the past few years.
