Serving up more than just recipes, celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has joined forces with Bath MP Wera Hobhouse to cook up a campaign aimed at improving education for dyslexic children. With millions of pupils struggling to digest lessons due to undiagnosed dyslexia, the pair are demanding schools get the right ingredients to support every child’s learning needs.
Jamie, who has spoken openly about his own struggles with dyslexia, met with Mrs Hobhouse in Parliament on Monday, March 11, as part of his ‘We Need To Talk About Dyslexia’ campaign. With three children in every classroom affected by dyslexia, he is calling for better teacher training to help identify and support students with the condition at an early stage.
Mrs Hobhouse has added her voice to the campaign, stressing the need for improved teacher awareness and training to ensure dyslexic children receive the support they need.
Speaking at the parliamentary event, Mrs Hobhouse also met with children living with dyslexia, listening to what she described as “powerful” stories about their struggles to access adequate support in school.
She said: “It was a pleasure to speak to Jamie Oliver today and hear many incredibly powerful and moving stories about what it is like to grow up with dyslexia.
“As a former school teacher, I know how important it is to have an education system that supports every child to thrive. But sadly, far too many children are being left to fall through the cracks.
“That’s why I’m backing Jamie Oliver’s campaign to improve education for children with dyslexia, starting with spotting the signs early and boosting training for teachers.”
Jamie Oliver’s campaign aims to raise awareness about the daily challenges faced by dyslexic children and push for policy changes that ensure schools have the right tools and knowledge to help every child reach their full potential.
