Independent TD for Galway East, Minister Seán Canney, has welcomed the announcement by Minister for Education, Helen McEntee, of 209 new special classes sanctioned by the National Council for Special Education (NCSE ) for the 2025/2026 school year, with a strong emphasis on additional supports for students in Galway and the west. . . .
Minister Canney welcomed the development, stating: “This announcement marks a significant step forward in ensuring that every child in Galway, regardless of their needs, has access to the education and support they deserve. These new classes will make a real difference to families across the county and will help create a more inclusive school environment for all students.”
Nationally, the Government has sanctioned 209 new special classes to date, with the NCSE continuing to work towards its target of 400 new special classes for the coming school year.
Minister Canney highlighted that this is just the beginning, with the NCSE engaging intensively with school patron bodies to confirm additional special classes in the coming weeks.
The Minister also called on schools to expedite their admissions processes, ensuring that families are given clarity about places as soon as possible: “We need to see urgent action now to translate these approvals into real opportunities for children who need them.”
Minister Canney will continue to engage with Minister McEntee, the Department of Education, the NCSE, and local schools to ensure that Galway and the wider region secure the resources needed to provide the highest standard of education for all children.
