A Laois parent is fighting for a school place in September for her child with autism. 


Audrey Norton says her five year old son Dara can't get a place in an autism unit in a mainstream primary school in his hometown of Portlaoise.


He is currently in an early intervention class in Naíscoil Kantara at Timahoe's Scoil Mhuire Fatima- but needs a place with somewhere that will suit his needs as he also has a global developmental delay.


Ms Norton says children without a place in the area are travelling up to an hour on a bus to schools outside of their county- but she believes her son has a right to be educated in his community:
