The establishment of six new special classes in schools across Sligo and Leitrim for the 2025/26 academic year has been hailed as an important step forward for children with special needs and their families in the region.
The newly designated special classes will be located at Drumcong NS in Ballinamore, Scoil Naomh Molaise in Grange, Scoil Ursula, Gaelscoil Chnoc na Ré, and Mercy College in Sligo.
The four primary schools will each have a dedicated special teaching room designed to cater for a class of six pupils, supported by one class teacher and two special needs assistants (SNAs).
At post-primary level, Mercy College will have 1.5 teaching posts and two SNAs working with six students.
Minister of State Marian Harkin TD said this is excellent news for children with special educational needs and their parents.
“The addition of these special classes is vital for ensuring children with special needs receive the necessary educational supports.
