March 17th is "Profound Autism Awareness Day" in Kentucky

Mar 17, 2025, WHAS, Louisville, KY: Monday is Profound Autism Awareness Day in Kentucky

Monday is Profound Autism Awareness Day across Kentucky.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, about 27% of kids with autism have the intense symptoms of profound autism, and about 1 in 36 children in the United States is diagnosed with autism.

And Kentucky pays $13 to 14 million a year to send kids with profound autism out of state because the state has no residential facility to help.

Suggestions that came from a recent hearing included sending lawmakers on a field trip to residential facilities across the country that are doing well in this field, and inviting their administrators to Frankfort to share their successes and how Kentucky could move forward.
