New Jersey: 2 hospitals receive ASD certification; staff received autism training

April 3, 2025, ROI: Two N.J. hospitals earn Certified Autism Center designation

Bergen New Bridge Medical Center and The Children’s Hospital at Saint Peter’s University Hospital have each been designated as Certified Autism Centers by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES).

Both hospitals trained the majority of their clinical staff to better support autistic and sensory-sensitive patients, introducing tools like sensory kits, calming spaces, and communication supports to improve patient care and reduce anxiety.

“These certifications reflect our commitment to inclusive, equitable care for all patients, especially those with autism,” said Leslie D. Hirsch, CEO of Saint Peter’s Healthcare System. Bergen New Bridge President and CEO Deborah Visconi echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of creating safe, welcoming spaces for neurodivergent individuals.

IBCCES awards the designation to organizations that complete specialized autism training and implement long-term strategies for accessible, sensory-friendly healthcare.
