Educational Service Unit 8 has a long-standing commitment to supporting its special education department, which has been expanding to meet the growing needs of our special needs students in the school systems.
Covering 34 public and nonpublic school districts across Northeast Nebraska, ESU 8 has been a cornerstone in education since the beginning of 1967. When ESU 8 started, it consisted of few special education staff members.
Now, it has grown to 83 staff members employed in the SPED department. Under the leadership of Ruth Miller, special education director, ESU 8 encompasses a variety of departments dedicated to serving students, including psychology, early childhood, speech and language, vision, LMHP (licensed mental health practitioners) and deaf and hard of hearing.
ESU 8 provides comprehensive services for students with disabilities, ranging from birth to 21 years of age, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to succeed. ESU 8 employees in school districts provide services to children with developmental delays, speech/language impairments, orthopedic impairments, cognitive impairments, autism, emotional disorders, vision impairments, hearing impairments, specific learning disabilities and other disabilities.
