Feb 7, 2025, Bury Council: Green light for improvements at special school
NW England
A new wing is to be built at Millwood school to improve the educational experience for children with special needs.
The multi-million-pound project will also ensure that work to fix the roof and other building defects will be completed, after the original contractors went into administration.
Creating more capacity at Millwood is a priority element of the council’s plans to improve special needs provision in the borough. This would meet increasing demand in Bury, and reduce the need to place children with independent providers.
The council’s cabinet, on 12 February, is being asked to approve the budget for the scheme, with a targeted completion date of September 2026, and to seek competitive tenders to carry out the work.
Councillor Lucy Smith, cabinet member for children and young people, said: “There has been a huge rise in recent years in the number of young people identified with special needs.
“It is essential that we meet this demand and help our children get the best opportunities they can in the right setting.”
