(UK) Essex: School to add special needs classroom; 'significant need'

Feb 25, 2025, Essex Live: Special needs school planning new classrooms due to 'significant demand'

A school in Essex is planning to turn its overnight accommodation into a new classroom due to "significant demand.” Glenwood School in Benfleet, which caters to special needs children, is proposing the plan and says there has been a “sustained and significant increase” in the number of children and young people with special needs education and health care plans in Essex. . . .

The school intends to remodel the existing sleeping quarters within the residential block to support “current pupil needs” within the area. The planning documents say: “The applicant seeks a flexible arrangement to meet the changing situation. The current layout, for example, seeks to retain three home spaces, provide a physiotherapy room, parent meeting area, dining and a communal social area. The facilities are designed to support the existing educational provision at the school but be adaptable moving forward.
