Jemma Dolan, the Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA has praised groups like Autism NI for their work in raising awareness.
This comes as World Autism Month began on April 1.
Ms Dolan said: "The aim of World Autism Month and World Autism Day is to focus on sharing stories and providing opportunities to increase understanding and acceptance of people with autism by fostering worldwide support.
"While progress has been made in autism services, including the appointment of an independent autism reviewer to oversee the autism strategy, real-life stories show much more work is needed.
"The ‘I Am Not Okay’ Spotlight programme highlighted the urgent need for better support for young people with autism and their families.
"As a society, we must do more to include people with autism in everyday life."
